First Graders Write Reviews

Our current writing unit asks first graders to consider their opinions and find convincing ways to support their thinking.  We began by judging a collection of items such as toy cars, shells, or lego characters.  The children compared the items in the collection and chose their favorite, then used examples to convince others to agree with them.  We talked about writing a catchy introduction, elaborating, and using counterarguments.  This week we began writing reviews of favorite books, movies, places, or toys to persuade others.  In addition to elaboration and organization, we are practicing language conventions such as spelling, capitalization , and punctuation.  Ask your child to tell you more about the review he or she is writing!
