We are also working hard to learn sight words. These words come up often when reading, and should be learned by heart so that children do not have to stop to figure them out. Most sight words are words that can not be sounded out because their spelling pattern does not follow the typical rules. See below for words that I have introduced so far! Some students have mastered how to read these words and are now working on how to spell them.

Building Reading Habits
I have a classroom full of readers! We started the year learning good habits for what to do before, during, and after reading such as to take a "sneak peek" at the pictures before you read, to think about what you are reading while reading the words, and to do something at the end of your book. You could read it again, find your favorite page and tell why it's a favorite, or retell what the book is about. First grade readers are also developing strategies for tackling hard words. We are learning to drop bad habits such as freezing, mumbling, or asking someone to tell us the word and instead try a strategy. So far we have learned five different habits for solving hard words. Check them out on the chart below, and ask your child to tell you about them!
