Lettuce Planting and Compost Lesson

We had a wet, but nice walk with Mrs. Koch's class to the High School to tour the greenhouse, plant lettuce, and visit the school's chickens. Chrissy from Central Vermont Waste Management District, led the activities along with the help of several high school students. Later, Chrissy joined us in the classroom to talk about the compost cycle. We played a great game to help us determine what items can be recycled, composted, re-used, or sent to the landfill. Ask your child to tell you more!

Tulips

Our year-long study of tulips is reaching an end.  After planting tulips in the fall, and recording our observations all year, they have finally bloomed!  This week we will work on a close reading of the book, Boxes For Katja, in which the themes of friendship, hardship, and community are woven together with a tulip surprise!  Ask your child to tell you more!

First Grade News

We have a busy few weeks left of school!  Here are the upcoming dates to note for first grade!

Wednesday, June 1st - Bus trip to North Branch Nature Center

We will be taking a school bus to North Branch for a special end of ECO day.  We plan to leave around 11:00, bring our lunches for a picnic, and return to school in time for dismissal.  Please let me know if you would like to join us!  If you would like a bagged school lunch, please let me know and I will order one for your child.

Friday, June 3rd - Community Visit to the Kellogg-Hubbard Library

We will walk to the library at 1:00 for a short tour and preview of summer offerings at the library!  Parents are welcome to join us!

Sunday, June 5th - Class Picnic at Hubbard Park

Tuesday, June 7th - Field Trip to VINS

More information will be coming soon.  We will need lots of chaperones for this fun trip to the nature institute to see the birds we have been learning about!

Thursday, June 9th - Birthday Breakfast (date changed)

We will celebrate the kids with summer birthdays: Elise, Parthavi, Cedric, Mabel, Parker, and Anita!

Thursday, June 9th - Community Visit to the State House

We will leave school at 12:40, and walk to the State House for a tour!  Parents are welcome to join us!

Tuesday, June 14th - Last Day of School

The last day is a half day for the children.
