Mapping

We had another great ECO lesson.  We joined Mrs. Bate's class at Harrison Preserve for more bird watching, games, and exploring.  When we returned to school, we used a map to trace our walk to Harrison.  We then read a great book, Me on the Map, by  Joan Sweeney and created a 3-D map of our classroom with blocks.  The children then used paper and pencil to draw their own maps of the classroom!  Everyone had a great time!

8th Grade TRY Team

We are lucky to have students from Main Street Middle school who are part of Teens Reaching Youth for the Environment (TRY), present lessons on renewable energy and the environment to our first grade class!  Our first lesson centered around light energy.  The children conducted an experiment to determine the effect of placing different objects in front of a beam of light.  They used translucent, transparent, and opaque materials to see which materials allowed light to pass through, and which created a shadow.  The children also practiced using the scientific method, and spent time discussing their results with the class.  This experiment tied in perfectly with our science unit on sound and light waves.  Ask your child to tell you more!
